Effects of cigarettes smoking during pregnancy
Hey are you smoking during your pregnancy period? Then certainly put a halt on this habit of yours at this very moment if you really want to see your baby in healthy condition. You will be surprised to read that smoking during pregnancy is considered to be one of the leading preventable causes of low birth weight babies. Pregnant smokers give birth to smaller babies, have greater chances of premature birth and placental malformations, and have a more premature rupture of the membrane and stillbirths. Not only this, the babies also have high incidence of sudden infant death syndrome.
There are some long lasting effects also in relation to smoking during pregnancy periods. Pregnant smokers give birth to baby who is shorter in stature, have retarded reading abilities. They are rated lower in social adjustment and have more behavioral problems rather the children of women who did not smoke during pregnancy. So if you are pregnant, then your best bets should be to stop smoking or cut down its consumption as much as possible. Also, make sure you avoid being around with others who are heavy smokers. Always remember that there exits a direct relationship between the number of cigarette a woman smokes per day and the degree to which her baby gets affected.
Even if the mothers do not smoke during pregnancy, infants living in households where others smoke are at increased risk. Such infants are more than twice more likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome than those living in smoke-free environments. The infants of women who smoke more than twenty cigarettes a day are more likely to have recurrent ear infection. Also, women who smoke are less likely to breastfeed her baby, thus depriving a baby from important immunity booster. So, if you are a smoker, pregnancy is the best time to stop.
