Ear Infections in Infants

November 24, 2008

Ear infections are quite common in children, especially in winter months. However, as a parent, you should recognize the symptoms of ear infection and get it treated fast so as to avoid further complications. Moreover, since your infant will not be able to display the exact cause of his discomfort, you need to look for symptoms to detect ear infections. Given below are some symptoms, causes and treatment of ear infections in infants.

Though finding out about ear infections in children is tough, you can detect it by seeing if your child has cold and then also fever in a couple days. Fevers are more in common in infants and toddlers than in older children. The child will become cranky and irritable and will also find difficulty in swallowing. Thus, if your child starts his feed but pulls away from it then it may be due to his difficulty in sucking and swallowing which is often caused by ear infections. Ear infections lead to pain and while a slightly older child will be able to express his discomfort in words, infants and babies find it difficult to express and thus will be seen often crying and become cranky and even aggressive.

In an ear infection, fluid fills the middle ear bringing with it a feeling of fullness and even decreased hearing in the affected area. If your child has cold, allergy or sinus infection, then he is at a higher risk for ear infection. Why children are susceptible to ear infection is a common question asked by many parents. This is because children’s Eustachian tubes are short and horizontal making them susceptible to infections. In case you discover the above mentioned symptoms in your infant, then you should consult a doctor to get it treated as soon as possible so as to relieve your child from pain and discomfort.
