Dry Eye Syndrome

February 7, 2009

Can you imagine your life without tears? Tears are an integral part of our existence as they characterize the sad and happy moments of our life. More than that, they are vital for our eyes as they lubricate it and protect it from external factors.

As the name suggests, dry eye is a condition characterized by insufficient production of tears by the eye. Given below are the various symptoms and causes of dry eyes.

When the eyes produce less tear glands than normal, then the conjunctiva becomes less moist and leads to various symptoms like irritation, burning and other discomforts to the eye. Red itchy eyes and a stringy discharge from the eyes are other symptoms of dry eyes.

In addition, people who suffer from this problem often complain of blurred vision and even slight pain in their eyes. As against its name, a symptom which can be associated with dry eyes is unnecessary and uncalled for water in the eyes. However, these are neither tears of joy, sorrow or comfort. They simply aggravate the discomfort, irritation and pain of the eyes.

After having looked at the symptoms of dry eyes, let’s look at the various factors which can lead to this problem. The most common cause is the normal biological process of aging which leads to less production of oil and thus dry eyes. Also, if you have dry skin and dry skin related problems, then too you are vulnerable to dry eye syndrome. In addition, other factors like exposure to cigarette smoke, change in weather conditions, and even continuous straining of eyes via television and computer watching can lead to dry eyes.

Since eyes are one of the most beautiful gifts of nature, one should preserve them in good health to ensure a bright and happy life. Thus, if you experience the above mentioned symptoms, you should get your eyes treated on time to prevent serious consequences
