Drawbacks of a Sedentary Lifestyle

July 29, 2009

sedentarylifestyleIf you love lazing around and are fond of the comfort of your bed and couch, then you are doing some serious harm to your health. A sedentary lifestyle is an invitation to loads of problems, ranging from diabetes to cardiovascular problems and obesity. This article will throw light on some of the common disadvantages of leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Most of us today are leading a sedentary life. Today, most of us are busy in our workplace which is desk based and does not involve any physical movement.

In addition, the stress and strain of life is such that we seldom get time to indulge in exercises or even simple walking. And when it comes to children, technology has preoccupied them through computer and video games, thereby distancing them from nature and its benefits.

If you lead a sedentary life, then you are prone to various health problems. To begin with, a sedentary lifestyle makes you vulnerable to various kinds of cardiovascular disorders.

It all begins with being overweight and obese. If you don’t exercise or indulge in physical activity, then you are bound to put on extra pounds. These extra pounds, in turn, put stress on your heart and make you vulnerable to hypertension, heart attacks and strokes.

A sedentary lifestyle also makes you vulnerable to the problem of diabetes, especially to type 2 diabetes. In addition, it adversely affects your overall health over a period of time and also lowers down your alertness. A sedentary lifestyle is also linked with increased risk for joint pains and problems like those of arthritis and osteoporosis.

Thus, to remain healthy and fit, you need to change your lifestyle and bring a harmonious balance between your personal and professional life and between nature and technology.

Take time out for exercises and connect with nature through outdoor activities like walking, jogging, cycling and others.
