Dissociative Amnesia
You must have often heard of amnesia which is a problem associated with memory loss. There are two kinds of amnesia- dissociative and selective. This article will talk about dissociative amnesia, its causes and symptoms.
How will you feel if certain episodes of your life get washed out from your memory? These memories can be good, bad and even traumatic ones. However, dissociative amnesia is a medical problem in which a person can forget certain instances of his life and it can even lead to generalized memory loss where-in a person’s past life gets erased from his memory.
Dissociative amnesia does not necessarily imply that the memories of a person are eliminated from the mind. Such memories can be buried deep inside a person’s mind which the person is unable to recall. However, such memories can get recalled and triggered in certain circumstances.
People suffering from dissociative amnesia not only suffer from memory lapses of their past experiences, but they can also suffer from the inability to recall some of their personal information.
After understanding what dissociative amnesia is, let’s look at some of its causes. Dissociative amnesia can be caused by overwhelming stress, especially emotional and psychological stress, in a person’s life. Traumatic events in a person’s life can also trigger this problem.
Traumatic events can be sexual or emotional abuse, war, or accidents and calamities that a person has witnessed or experienced himself. It has been found that the problem of dissociative amnesia is more common in women and also in people who have witnessed traumatic events for longer periods of time.
Along with the above given causes, this problem can also be hereditary. Thus, people who have close family members suffering from amnesia can be prone to dissociative amnesia themselves.
There are various kinds of therapies that are being used to treat the problem of dissociative amnesia. These include psychotherapy and cognitive therapy amongst others.
