June 24, 2009

sleepdeprivationIf you are unable to get proper sleep at night and if you are sleeping for less than six hours a day, then you might be doing serious harm to your health. There can be various causes of inadequate sleep like stress, work, insomnia, or any other sleep disorder like sleep apnea.

Whatever be the cause, sleep deprivation is harmful for the overall health of your mind and body and this article will throw light on such disadvantages of sleep deprivation.

When you burn the midnight oil or when you suffer from lack of sleep, then you feel lethargic, fatigued and weak in the morning. The body seems to lack energy and freshness as lack of sleep affects your mind and body equally.

It is for this reason that people who don’t get a proper and sound sleep have low concentration and focus. Lack of sleep affects performance and productivity of a person and thus, it is always advised to have a sound and proper sleep before an important exam, interview or important work.

Lack of sleep also leads to changes in behavior as they make you more irritated and angry. This in turn is a cause of stress that is caused or aggravated by sleep deprivation. Stress is thus both a cause and a result of sleep deprivation.

Along with stress, anxiety and mood fluctuations, lack of sleep can also lead to depression in some cases.

Along with the above given disadvantages, sleep deprivation can also lead to your body becoming susceptible to various problems and ailments as lack of sleep has an adverse effect on your immune system.

Thus, if you are frequently troubled by colds and flu, then you must ensure that you are getting proper and adequate sleep as sleep deprivation lowers your immunity and makes you vulnerable to frequent infections.

Given above are various disadvantages of sleep deprivation and thus, you must try to get a proper sleep to lead a healthy life.
