Different ways to incorporate tofu in your daily food

September 17, 2008

Tofu is basically a tasteless foodstuff. It does not have a distinct flavor of its own, it’s rather bland. It absorbs the flavor of whatever you cook it with. It comes in variety of forms; you can choose the one you like. Silken tofu is bendable and you can toss some into a fruit smoothie and reap the benefits of soy without even noticing that the tofu is there.

One trick to enjoy eating tofu is to use it in a recipe that you already enjoy. You can add tofu to vegetable dishes, soups or stews. If you have a vegetable dish or a soup, you can add a firm or extra firm tofu in different, innovative ways that won’t be distracting to your palate. Firstly, just drain a block of firm tofu by placing it between two plates. Let it stand until a puddle forms on the bottom plate. Drain. Repeat this couple of times until the tofu gets dried up. Now, cut the block into small cubes and fry it in non-stick cooking spray or with few drops of healthy cooking oil until it turns golden brown. Now, Toss the fried cubes into your recipe and let it simmer. This will have the approximate texture and consistency of scrambled eggs.

If you are afraid to add tofu to any dish at your home, then take a step ahead and order it in a restaurant. Many places offer vegetarian versions of their popular menu items substituting tofu for meat. So, be daring and order the tofu at least once to try it. You may find that you prefer it. Trust me, once you genuinely like some dishes with tofu as its main ingredient; you will be more willing to try them at your home too.
