Dietary Care during Pregnancy

February 7, 2009

When the news of your being pregnant is shared, the first thing you’ll get to hear from everywhere is the importance of taking care of your health during the pregnancy period. Old wives tales are not called tales of wisdom just for nothing.

They have value and significance and thus, you should pay heed to them. Taking care of your diet and health becomes even more important during the pregnancy phase to ensure proper health and safety of your body and your developing fetus. Given below are some dietary considerations to be kept in mind during the pregnancy phase.

First of all, you need to remember that what you eat during the pregnancy period is something which you are feeding your body and also to your developing fetus. Avoid dieting during this phase and do not overeat also. You should follow the safe path of moderation with minimal intake of junk and unhealthy food. After all, your eating of junk food can have its adverse effect on your developing child.

Healthy and a balanced diet is the key during pregnancy and even during other stages of life. However, during pregnancy, it attains dual importance. You should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fresh juices, milk and dairy products are helpful.

Not to forget, keep your body hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Also, increase your intake of proteins. A healthy diet taken from beginning itself helps in minimizing the cravings for junk and unhealthy food in pregnant women.

Along with focusing on the intake of a well balanced nutritious diet, you should pay heed to certain food items to avoid. Minimize and avoid intake of foods that are high in artificial sugars, salt and fried stuff. Also avoid heavy doses of caffeine. Thus, take care of your diet during pregnancy as that helps to keep you healthy and fit along with aiding in the birth of a healthy child.
