Diet for Treating Pre Menstrual Syndrome

January 15, 2009

Many women suffer from the problem of Pre Menstrual Syndrome or PMS. The symptoms of PMS include fatigue, drowsiness, depression, mood swings, headaches, acne, insomnia, breast tenderness and backache amongst others. These are usually caused by high levels of hormone during this period.

To treat these unwanted symptoms, you can greatly rely on food and diet. Yes, you heard it right. Diet can play an important role in managing Pre Menstrual Syndrome. Given below are some important foods whose consumption can help prevent and treat symptoms of PMS.

Golden rules- never skip breakfasts. Have a nutritious breakfast and also avoid consumption of cold food before going to bed. Fruits and fresh vegetables are always a welcome. They aid in all problems and thus, there is no surprise that they help in treating PMS too. It has been found that increase in fiber rich foods can be helpful during these times. Thus, include fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes in your diet along with reducing the consumption of animal products. Eat whole grains, nuts and seeds like almonds, coconut, sesame and sunflower seeds.

Strictly avoid consumption of caffeine as it can increase the severity of PMS. Thus, avoid tea, coffee, cocoa and cola drinks. Cook food with olive oil and reduce your intake of sugar and preservative. Many women have a craving for chocolates during this period as chocolate helps in stimulating the production of endorphins that act as natural pain killers and chocolates also help in providing energy and mood enhancement. However, there are some healthy alternatives to chocolate too.

These include dried fruits like apricots and raisins. Have lots of water and try to provide your body with dietary minerals, vitamins and nutrients. Thus, by eating a healthy and a nutritious diet, you can easily prevent and ward off the symptoms of Pre Menstrual Syndrome.
