Diet for Diabetics

July 11, 2008

A proper diet can have an effective effect on the prevention and treatment of diabetes as diabetesis also associated as a lifestyle disease which occurs due to an increase in sugar level. Along with medication, diet plays an important role in the treatment of diabetes as the main objective of an effective diet is to maintain adequate nutrition along with maintaining desirable body weight so as to keep one’s blood sugar levels in check.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the human body does not effectively use the hormone, insulin, which is required to convert sugar and food into energy. Thus, the sugar level starts remaining high for such patients. Diabetic people’s intake of carbohydrates must be taken as complex starches rather than simple sugars as they break down more slowly to release glucose in blood. One should include more of high fiber foods in one’s diet as it slows down the glucose absorption by the body. In addition, food items that can be eaten by a diabetic patient includes all animal and meat fat, plain natural yogurt, vegetables and fruits, and even butter and cream can be used. However, one should avoid the intake of sugary items like sweets and chocolates, including the sugar-free ones. Sweetened fruits and low-fat yogurts should be avoided and one can take milk in small quantities.

If one has a great craving for sweets, one can substitute that with the intake of fruits. Food items like green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, radish and soups can be taken freely as they promote the overall health of the person. Though fruits are good for health, people suffering from diabetes should try to restrict themselves from the intake of fruits like mangoes, grapes and bananas due to the high sugar content in them. Thus, one should move towards healthy eating as a control on one’s diet along with a healthy mode of living can lead to a happier and a healthier living.
