July 20, 2009

coffewithdrawelDo you find your head pounding hard and aching severely when you skip a cup of coffee? If yes, then you might be experiencing a coffee withdrawal headache which is a common symptom suffered by coffee addicts who accidentally miss coffee or are purposely trying to get over this addiction.

There are various coffee withdrawal symptoms like fatigue, depression, low concentration and dip in alertness. However, one of the biggest and most common withdrawal symptom is that of headaches which can range from normal headaches to severe splitting and throbbing ones.

While an overdose of caffeine can lead to intense headaches, leaving it suddenly also won’t help as that too leads to the commonly known ‘withdrawal headache’.

This is because stopping coffee leads to a change in the blood supply to your brain. According to medical research, stopping coffee can lead to increased blood flow to the brain which in turn leads to withdrawal headaches.

If you are a coffee addict and are planning to quit coffee to prevent yourself from the harmful effects of caffeine, then you must plan your withdrawal. Don’t give up coffee suddenly as that will lead to withdrawal symptoms like nausea, muscle pain, fatigue and headaches, even migraine, amongst others.

You should gradually stop your habit of drinking many cups of coffee a day. You can begin by slowly reducing the number of coffee cups you have in a day before stopping it Completely.

Another natural way to reduce the intensity of coffee withdrawal symptoms is by keeping yourself well hydrated. Have plenty of water and fluids. In addition, drinking decaffeinated coffee too can help.

Coffee withdrawal headaches can lead to immense pain and discomfort and you may require analgesics to alleviate the pain. Thus, you must try to prevent the problem from occurring by following the above given tips.
