Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

July 17, 2008

People who sit for long hours on the desk and those who spend a lot of time on the computer are putting their health at risk. Sitting in one position for a long time can prove to be extremely hard on your body as it makes your body vulnerable to one of the most common health problem of today- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Medically known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a problem which targets the Central nervous system of a person leading to severe fatigue which is aggravated even by simple exertion. Everyone feels tired and depressed some or the other time in life. However, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is different as it is characterized by severe chronic fatigue with six months or longer duration which is accompanied by other symptoms like short term memory or concentration, sore throat, muscle pains and unusual headaches amongst others. Other symptoms like abdominal pain, chest pain, chronic cough, night sweats and irregular heartbeats are also observed in people with CFS.

Though there is no specific cause which has been defined for the eruption of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, causes like infectious agents, nutritional deficiency and immunologic dysfunction are believed to lead to this problem. Sitting for long durations on the computer is one factor which triggers off this syndrome. Before starting off with any medication, it is necessary to consult a doctor as fatigue does not necessarily imply CFS as it can be caused due to other problems also like thyroid and hormonal problems, eating disorders, drug reactions also due to various infections.

While there is no particular medicine which can cure CFS, one can manage the symptoms of this problem through a combination of therapies which aim at addressing coping techniques, symptoms and activity management. According to health research, people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Disorder should get adequate rest. In additions, patients should try to get a regular exercise along with a balanced diet to get over this problem in a faster and a easier way.
