Cavity Control in Toddlers

August 13, 2008

Baby’s teeth are temporary and thus one often tends to neglect their care and protection which eventually leads to the formation of cavities. Even though they are temporary, baby’s teeth are extremely important for chewing and talking and if it gets infected with a cavity, it can lead to a lot of discomfort and pain for the child along with leading to various infections like common cold and flu. Moreover cavities can also affect the root of a child’s tooth which in turn can lead to a damaging of his coming permanent teeth. It thus becomes extremely important to take proper care of the hygiene and health of a child’s teeth so that he remains healthy and happy.

Teeth care begins even when a child does not have his teeth. That is to say, as a parent you should clean the mouth of your young babies after every feed even if they have not started teething. This helps in preventing the growth of bacteria in the mouth which can lead to decay in later stages of life. Baby’s teeth usually come in about 6 months and one should take proper care of them by brushing them at least twice a day. Moreover, one should limit the intake of carbonated drinks in the child till at least 2-3 years as they promote tooth decay. Using fluoride toothpaste and an alcohol free mouthwash can be helpful in keeping one’s teeth healthy and infection-free. Some children are fond of chewing gums and as a parent you can convert this habit into a healthy one by giving them gums which contain xylitol as it helps in preventing tooth decay.

In addition to the above mentioned tooth care, one should get regular assessment of teeth done by a dentist so as to ensure the complete health of your baby. Teeth are an important constituent of one’s body and even if they are temporary, you should take proper care of your toddler’s teeth so as to help control cavity formation.
