Causes of Toenail Fungus
Toenail fungus is a very common infection that affects people of all age groups. However, to prevent this problem, you first need to be well informed of the various factors that can lead to this infection. This article will throw light on some of the common causes of toenail fungus.
The chances of developing toenail fungus are high in moist and humid environments. It is for this reason that many people get this infection in places like gyms and swimming pools, especially if they walk barefoot in such moist places.
Toenail fungus can spread from one person to another. You must thus exercise caution while visiting such places.
In addition, footwear is another important factor that can lead to toenail fungus. Cramping your feet in closed and tight fitting shoes can lead to this infection.
Thus, it is advised that people should either buy shoes that have breathing holes or they should avoid wearing shoes for a continuous stretch of time. Also, you must ensure that your shoes are of proper fit and are not too tight.
Lack of personal hygiene is another major cause of toenail fungus. You need to ensure that you keep your toes and feet clean and dry. Change socks regularly and you should thoroughly dry your feet before wearing socks and shoes. In addition, if you sweat a lot, you can apply little powder on your feet to prevent growth of fungus.
Sharing footwear can also lead to toenail fungus. Since this infection can spread from one person to another, wearing footwear of an infected person can put you at a risk of developing toenail fungal infection.
Along with the above causes, it has also been found that people who have diabetes have more chances of developing toenail fungus. This is because such problems weaken the immune system, thereby making the body vulnerable to various kinds of infections.
