Causes of Sleep Apnea
There are various kinds of sleep disorders and one of them is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a medical problem in which a person suffers from lack of oxygen and stops breathing for a few seconds when in deep sleep, leading to snoring, choking, and it can even be fatal if timely action is not taken.
This article will talk about the various causes that can be responsible for a person suffering from sleep apnea.
Since the problem of sleep apnea deprives adequate oxygen supply to the brain and also deprives a person from a sound and proper sleep, people suffering from this problem feel weak, lethargic and fatigued during the day time. They have low concentration powers and can also suffer from high blood pressure.
Obesity is the prime cause that is associated with the problem of sleep apnea. A majority of people who have sleep apnea are obese. According to medical experts, excessive fat in the body puts pressure on the airway, leading to problems like sleep apnea. In addition, certain lifestyle habits like smoking and drinking are also some causes that can lead to this problem.
Certain physical attributes like the shape of the head and the size of the neck are also some risk factors of sleep apnea. If a person has a small windpipe, then he is at a higher risk of developing this problem.
People who suffer from chronic acid reflux and GERD are at a higher risk of developing the problem of sleep apnea as chronic acid reflux can scar the throat and lead to obstructions. Inflammation and congestion of the airway, be it due to cold, sinus, allergies or due to the respiratory problem of asthma, are also some causes of sleep apnea. In addition, sleep apnea can also be caused by inflamed or large tonsils.
Thus, one should be aware of the causes of sleep apnea so that one can prevent or effectively treat it.
