Causes of Premature Birth
As the name suggests, premature birth refers to the cases when the baby arrives before its scheduled date. Medically, it is said that when a baby takes birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed, then it can be referred as premature birth.
Having a healthy pregnancy is a desire of all expecting mothers and premature birth cannot be seen as healthy pregnancy as this gets with it its own set of complications. Given below are some common causes of premature birth.
Knowing the causes of premature birth is an essential step towards preventing this condition. It has been found that if you have already had one pregnancy and that too of premature birth, then your chances of having premature delivery this time is higher.
Additionally, if you are carrying twins and triplets, then too there are chances of your having a premature delivery. These are certain things you don’t have a control on but you can definitely consult your doctor for ensuring you have a healthy delivery, even if it is a premature one.
If you drink during pregnancy, then you raise your risk factor of having a premature delivery. Similar risk is posed by cigarette smoking and thus smoking and drinking should be strictly avoided to have a healthy pregnancy.
Along with the above factors, there are also certain medical conditions that increase the risk of premature birth. If you are carrying certain infections, like those of uterine or cervix, then you can suffer from preterm labor. It is thus important to get such infections treated on time.
Similarly, other problems like diabetes and high blood pressure also increase your chances for premature delivery. In addition, lack of prenatal care and insufficient diet or poor nutrition are some other causes responsible for premature birth of a child.
