Causes of Palpitation

June 9, 2009

palpitationWhen we run miles or do some strenuous exercises, then we often feel our heart pounding and beating faster. However, there are people who have this feeling without doing any strenuous physical activity.

These irregular and forceful beatings of the heart are refereed to as palpitations and they are not necessarily associated with some kind of heart ailment. This article will throw light on some causes that lead to the problem of palpitation.

As mentioned above, palpitations are often caused when one undertakes some sort of physical activity. However, the increased beating of the heart caused by physical exercise subsides after some time.

People who are nervous and stressed often experience the problem of palpitation. You must have noticed your heart beating faster at the time of exams or results.

This is because nervousness and anxiety are some of the key causes of palpitations. Thus, you must try to de-stress yourself so as to naturally deal with the problem of palpitation.

Excessive smoking and drinking are some of the other causes of palpitation. People who drink a lot often experience the fast and irregular beatings of their heart. In addition, excessive intake of caffeine and nicotine can also lead to the problem of palpitation.

Hormonal changes in the body can result in palpitation and thus this problem can be experienced during menstruation and pregnancy. Certain medications can also lead to palpitations.

In addition, it has been found that palpitations can be caused by some underlying medical problem like that of hyperthyroidism, anemia, and also certain problems that put pressure on the heart. Temporary illnesses like fever and exertion can also be causes of palpitation.

If your problem of palpitation is severe and prolonged, then you must visit your doctor to find out the exact cause of it so that you can effectively deal with it.
