Causes of Nosebleeds

February 20, 2009

Nosebleeds is a medical problem characterized by discharge of blood from the nose, majorly due to hemorrhaging in the nose. Looking at blood discharge from nose makes everyone think about the severity of this problem along with possible causes that can lead to it. This article aims to answer some common questions on the causes of nosebleeds.

Nosebleeds occur as a result of damage to the delicate blood vessels inside the nose. Trauma or injury to the nose can lead to nosebleeds. This problem is more prominent in winters and cold weathers since cold environmental conditions lead to dryness which in turn leads to the nose becoming dry, cracked and prone to bleeding. Also, if you are in a frequent habit of picking your nose, then you might just damage those sensitive blood vessels, leading to nosebleeds.

Infections in the nose, cold, allergies, and frequent sneezing can lead to the problem of nosebleeds. Frequent and forceful blowing of nose can also lead to this problem, so can an injury or an infection of the nose. Nosebleeds is a common problem which can affect people of all ages but it is more commonly witnessed in children.

Further, this problem is more common in children suffering from persisting respiratory problems. Apart from the mentioned causes, there are also other factors which can be responsible for nosebleeds. These include excessive pressure on the nose, as experienced in high altitude regions and also intake of certain medications.

While minor nosebleeds can be treated at home through some natural home remedies, if your nosebleeds occur frequently or if there is heavy discharge of blood, then you must consult your doctor. This is because recurrent nosebleeds can be a symptom of some underlying problem like high blood pressure or even a nose tumor.
