Causes of Nail Infection

December 4, 2008

How many of us take care of our nails or pay them attention which is due to them? Unfortunately, not many of us. However, nails are not only important for beauty and look but also are a strong indicator of personal hygiene. We need to take extra care of our nails as infections in them are not necessarily limited to them only and can be an indicator of some other problem in the body too. Thus, you need to recognize the various causes of nail infection so as to get it treated on time.

You must have heard of problems like nail discoloration or spoon shaped nails. While the former is a result of anemia, the latter can be caused due to psoriasis or due to deficiency of Vitamin A and zinc in the body. Another problem which leads to nail infections is Candida. This is a problem which involves a buildup of yeast throughout the body and nail infection is just one symptom of it. This is because yeast tries to escape through any part of your body and one such outlet it finds in nails. Did you know that certain kinds of cancers can affect the nails and lead to some nail infections? Sounds scary? Well, it is true. However, this does not imply that every kind of nail infection should be treated with fear of cancer. Usually, if you have acrylic nails and you notice a nail infection, then it is most probably due to acrylic and not cancer. However, get a doctor’s advice if you see great unexpected changes in your nails. Most commonly, the wear and tear that our nails go through lead to their changes and even infections. However, it is necessary to take proper care of the health of one’s nails and also to watch them carefully so that unexpected changes can be got examined by a doctor to rule out any internal complication.
