Causes of Muscle Spasms
Cramping and contraction of muscles is a condition termed as muscle spasms. Such spasms are extremely painful and are caused by a number of factors ranging from overuse of muscles to nervous problems.
Dehydration is a major cause of muscle spasms. Dehydration can be caused by excessive sweating, less intake of water, over-exercising, and also due to some medical problems like fever and vomiting.
When a body loses water, it also loses some of the vital salts like sodium, magnesium, and potassium. Thus, it is necessary to replenish the lost fluids and salts in your body to prevent the painful problem of muscle cramps.
Excessive intake of alcohol can also lead to muscle spasms as alcohol dehydrates the body and leads to loss of vital salts. Nutritional imbalances are also one of the causes of muscle cramps.
When you overuse a particular muscle, you tend to tire and exhaust it and this leads to the problem of muscle spasms. Excessive and prolonged exercise leads to overstraining of muscles, eventually causing spasms and cramps. Thus, when your body shows signs of pain and fatigue, then you must stop exercising so that your muscles get proper rest and relaxation.
There are some medical problems that can lead to the problem of muscle spasms. These include illnesses like anemia, diabetes and even kidney disorders. Heart problems can also lead to frequent muscle cramps and spasms. This is because when your heart arteries get blocked and narrow, it restricts the supply of oxygen and nutrients, thereby leading to muscle spasms.
There are many neurological problems that can lead to muscle spasms. These include problems like multiple sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, and injuries to the spinal cord. Similarly, damage to nerves can lead to spasms in the muscles. In addition, certain metabolic disorders can also lead to muscle spasms.
Above given are the various causes of muscle spasms and one should be aware of them to prevent the problem.
