Causes of Hiccups in Babies
You must have often noticed many people, especially babies, suffering from frequent hiccups. A hiccup is not any medical problem in itself. Instead, it is quite common for babies to have hiccups and this article will talk about the various causes that can lead to hiccups in babies.
Hiccups are usually a result of swallowing air. Babies get frequent hiccups as a result of swallowing air when they are being fed. Babies can get hiccups during the feed and also after feeds.
This is because when babies are being fed, they suck and swallow the air quite often, leading to gas formation which in turn leads to hiccups. Patting the baby at his back often helps him overcome his problem of hiccups. Also, you can continue feeding the baby even if he gets hiccups.
Many small children too face the problem of hiccups. This usually occurs after eating or after drinking carbonated drinks. Though swallowing excessive air is the major cause of hiccups in babies, there can be other causes too. For instance, if your baby gets suddenly excited or stressed, then he can have hiccups.
Though hiccups are harmless and not a major cause of worry, there are times when they may be indicative of some underlying problem. Usually, hiccups in babies can be caused by the problem of Gastroesophageal disease (GERD).
In addition, if your child displays some other problems or symptoms like blood in coughs or stomach pain and cramps, then you must consult a doctor to rule out any serious underlying ailment.
Hiccups are usually harmless and get over in a matter of few minutes. In case your child is feeling uncomfortable, then here are few things you can do to naturally help him overcome hiccups. Make him sip some water or make him sneeze. Asking your child to hold his breath for some time can also help him out.
