Causes of Diarrhea

If you have suddenly witnessed an increase in the frequency of stools accompanied by loose stools, then you might have developed the problem of diarrhea. Diarrhea is a common problem but it can also take a serious shape as witnessed in acute diarrhea. Along with frequent and loose stools, diarrhea can lead to muscle cramps, especially cramps in abdominal region; acidity and gas; and nausea and vomiting amongst others. Let’s first look at the various factors which can lead to this problem.

Have you started feeling the problem of diarrhea after eating some stale food or outside food which did not suit you? Food poisoning and infections is a major cause for diarrhea. Viral, bacterial and parasitical infections can all lead to this discomforting and even painful problem. If diarrhea is because of food poisoning, then you might experience abdominal cramps and vomiting. Gastroenteritis and infections of any kind can lead to diarrhea.

There are also certain digestive disorders that can lead to the problem of chronic diarrhea. These include problems like pancreas disorder, Crohn’s disease, food and lactose intolerance and food allergies amongst others. Additionally, there are also certain drugs and medications, especially antibiotics that can lead to diarrhea. Medications used for treatment of other ailments like anti-inflammatory drugs can also lead to diarrhea.

You must have noticed many children going frequently to the bathrooms before their exams or results. This is because stress, tension, and anxiety are some causes which can trigger diarrhea. If you are a heavy drinker, then you too are at a higher risk for diarrhea as the latter can be easily triggered by excess alcohol consumption.

As seen from above, there are various reasons that can cause diarrhea. Being aware of the various causes of diarrhea is essential to prevent the problem itself.
