Causes of Cold Sores

February 11, 2009

Usually caused by a virus, cold sores are small but painful and even pus filled sores that affect the lips, mouth or nose of a person. Painful blisters, fever, irritability, and not to forget the hampering of one’s appearance are all associated with cold sores. Many people suffering from this problem often face the problem of reoccurring cold sores. This happens when the virus causing cold sores does not get completely eliminated from the body. Let’s first look at all the causes that can lead to cold sores.

As mentioned before, cold sores are caused by a virus known as the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Even if you are not affected by this problem, you put yourself at a risk by staying in close proximity of the affected person as cold sores are contagious by nature. Thus, staying close to the affected person and kissing and touching the person can all lead to this problem. While the person suffering from cold sores gets relief in few days following medication, the virus does not get eliminated in most of the cases. The result is re-occurrence of cold sores.

While it is true that cold sores often recur, there are certain factors which trigger it off. These include factors like exposure to ultraviolet rays, especially bright sunshine; weak immune system; menstruation and changes of hormones amongst others. One of the main trigger for cold sores is stress, be it emotional or physical. Suffering from other ailments, overworking yourself, or being bogged down emotionally- all kinds of stress can trigger the recurrence of cold sores.

The famous proverb-‘prevention is better than cure’ is the key for healthy living. And for prevention, you need awareness which stems from knowing the causes and triggers of any ailment. Thus, be aware of the causes of cold sores to effectively deal with it.
