Causes of Amnesia
How would you feel if suddenly you wake up in the morning and find yourself unable to recall names, words and your loved and even hated experiences of life? The thought of memory loss itself is scary. However, there are people who suffer from such problems and this is medically termed as amnesia.
Unlike the normal memory deterioration associated with the process of aging, amnesia is a medical problem in which the person forgets names and especially words and verbal communication. In a more serious kind of amnesia, the person affected tends to forget his identity. However, there are chances he might still retain his general knowledge and public information. Additionally, in amnesia, the person also tends to forget his life’s major experiences making his long lived beautiful life’s experiences getting wiped away in a jiffy. Thus, amnesia can show itself in various forms: from partial memory loss to even total memory loss.
Now since we have understood what amnesia is all about, let’s look at its causes in detail. Since amnesia is a problem involving memory, it is usually caused by some sort of physical damage to the brain and also by degeneration of brain cells. The problem of Alzheimer is often a cause for amnesia.
When we talk of factors that lead to amnesia, they include physical injury to the head and other factors that damage the nerve cells and the overall health of the brain. Any kind of physical injury that affects the brain like a head fall or a trauma can lead to amnesia. Strokes and certain infections like herpes that affect the head can lead to amnesia and memory loss. Additionally, malnutrition or lack of proper diet, alcohol or drug abuse, and excessive stress can all lead to this problem as they lead to degeneration and eventual death of brain cells.
