Causes and Symptoms of Vitiligo

November 25, 2009

vitiligoYou must have seen some people having white patches on various parts of their skin. This is a skin disorder and is medically known as Vitiligo. This skin problem occurs when the skin’s pigment forming cells get destroyed. This article will throw light on some of the common causes and symptoms of Vitiligo.

As mentioned above, Vitiligo is a result of depigmentation of skin and is characterized by uneven white patches on the skin. Usually, Vitiligo starts on those regions of the skin that are exposed to sun.

For instance, in the early stages, white patches can be seen on one’s face, back, and hands. After some time, these patches can be seen on various other parts of the body. In addition, in many cases, these white patches appear on areas where a person has suffered from a cut or a wound.

Along with leading to a white patchy skin, Vitiligo can also lead to premature graying of hair and growth of white hairs on the depigmented skin areas.

The exact cause of Vitiligo is not known as research is still going on. However, there are many theories which have put forward various causes and risk factors of Vitiligo. To begin with, this problem is a result of genetics as it has been found that many people who are affected by Vitiligo have inherited it from their parents or grandparents.

People suffering from autoimmune disorders can also be affected by Vitiligo. This can happen when your body starts destroying its own skin pigments, melanocytes. Similarly, skin injuries like burns, cuts, and incisions can also lead to the problem of Vitiligo. According to research, excessive stress and anxiety can also act as triggers for Vitiligo.

Understanding a problem is a must before preventing or treating it. Thus, understand the above given common causes and symptoms of Vitiligo to effectively deal with it.
