Causes and Symptoms of Slipped Disc

July 16, 2009

slippeddiscThe spine is one of the most important parts of our body as it controls a majority of our movements. However, there are various kinds of spine related problems a person can suffer from and one of them is slipped disc.

Between the bones of the spine, there are discs that act as protective ‘shock-absorbing pads’. Slipped disc refers to a condition in which the disk of either the neck region or the lumbar region ruptures, leading to immense pressure on the nerves.

The problem of slipped disc can be caused by a number of factors. Many people with this problem had improper postures and also improper ways of bending forward.

In addition, accidents and spinal cord injuries are a major cause of this problem and slipped disc can also be caused by improper lifting of heavy items and by putting your back and spinal cord under excessive stress or strain.

Since the problem of slipped disc puts immense pressure on your nerves, it leads to a lot of pain and can even restrict your movement. If you have a slipped disc in the upper region, then it can restrict your neck movement and a slipped disc of the lumbar region can put restrictions on the movement of your limbs.

Along with restricting movement, slipped disc can greatly affect your life and lead to various symptoms. These include numbness and a tingling feeling in your arms and shoulders, especially if you have a slipped disc in the neck.

Similarly, if you have a slipped disc in your back region, then you will feel heaviness and numbness in your legs and thigh region. In addition, it can also lead to difficulty in controlling bladder and bowel movements.

Thus, given above are the various causes and symptoms of slipped disc and if one suffers from this problem, one should get a timely checkup done for a timely treatment.
