Causes and Symptoms of Scabies

A common skin infection, scabies is characterized by small bumps and blisters that are itchy and often get red and inflamed. It is caused by tiny parasites that deposit themselves under your skin and start laying eggs, leading to gradual buildup of the infection. Read below to understand the signs, symptoms and causes of scabies.

First of all, you must know that scabies is a contagious skin infection which spreads when one comes in close proximity to the infected person. Thus, it usually spreads faster in crowded places and many children also get this infection if someone in their class is infected by it. Similarly, having sexual contact with an infected person can also lead to the spread of this infection. Also, if you shake hands with the infected person or share the same clothes or bed sheets, then too you are at a risk of catching this contagious infection.

Scabies can affect many parts of your body like your hands, feet, the webs of skin between fingers and toes, breasts, navel region, and even genitals. It appears mainly as red or dark lines on the skin’s surface accompanied by a persistent itch. One of the major symptoms of scabies is the accompanying itch. The itch gradually becomes severe, leading to a lot of discomfort and even difficulty while sleeping. This is because the itching symptom of scabies becomes severe at night.

If you find yourself infected with any of the above symptoms, then you must consult a doctor. Scabies is usually treated by medications and creams. Also, you must follow some basic preventive steps to avoid the spread of infection. These include avoiding close proximity with people, properly washing, drying and disinfecting your clothes and bed sheets. All these steps can ensure that scabies does not spread as scabies is a skin infection that is contagious by nature.
