Phlegm refers to the secretion and discharge from the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. One often coughs up this discharge and it can lead to a lot of discomfort and irritation. The problem of phlegm often accompanies other problems like running nose and throat congestion.

As mentioned above, throat infections are one of the major causes of phlegm. In addition, if your phlegm has some traces of blood in it, then you must immediately get it checked as it can indicate some serious underlying problem like tuberculosis and even lung cancer.

Smoking is another factor that leads to cough which in turn can lead to phlegm. Thus, one must avoid smoking as it can lead to numerous health problems. In addition, certain infections and allergies which lead to inflammation of the throat can also lead to the problem of phlegm.

After having looked at the various causes of phlegm, let’s look at some simple ways by which you can treat this problem. First of all, you should have plenty of water and avoid your throat from getting dry. To prevent dryness, it is also a good idea to use humidifiers. In addition, avoid consumption of alcohol as that can lead to dryness.

Along with water, you can also try out a natural home made herbal drink. All you need to do is to boil ginger and add honey to it to create a natural drink for treatment of cough and phlegm. Having hot soups with black pepper added in them can also help.
