Causes and Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure

October 5, 2009

lowbloodpreserWe all focus a lot on hypertension and high blood pressure and its associated problems and health risks. However, most of us just tend to neglect the problem of low blood pressure.

Just like high blood pressure, a dip in blood pressure too is a medical problem which must be dealt with in time. This article will throw light on some common causes and symptoms of low blood pressure.

Low blood pressure, also medically termed as hypotension, can be caused by various factors. When a person bleeds a lot, his blood pressure can drop. Thus, bleeding caused by surgeries, injuries, or ulcers can lead to the problem of low blood pressure.

Dehydration is another common factor responsible for low blood pressure. Thus, a person might experience weakness and low blood pressure when he sweats a lot, or when he suffers from problems like vomiting and diarrhea where-in his body gets dehydrated. Intake of certain medicines can also sometimes lower the blood pressure in the body.

Along with the above mentioned causes, low blood pressure can also be caused by some cardiovascular problem or heart diseases like pulmonary embolism or pericarditis. Similarly, weak heart muscles can also lead to a dip in blood pressure.

Low blood pressure implies that the blood pumps out less oxygen and thus your body’s cells and organs often don’t get the required amounts of blood and oxygen. This in turn can give rise to a number of symptoms as well as other health problems that are associated with low blood pressure.

A person suffering from low blood pressure feels weak and fatigued and also complains of lightheadedness and dizziness. Such people can also faint. In addition, blurred vision, discomfort or even pain in the chest region, anxiety and headaches are other symptoms of low blood pressure.

One should pay attention to the signs and symptoms of one’s body to find out the underlying problem. If you face the above given symptoms of low blood pressure, then you must understand its cause and then get the required treatment.
