Causes and Symptoms of Excessive Sleeping

Excessive sleeping is also a kind of sleeping disorder and there can be various causes for it. This article will talk about the various causes and symptoms associated with excessive sleeping.
Excessive sleeping during night time is referred to as hypersomnia. People suffering from hypersomnia sleep for more than 10 hours at night and are still unable to feel fresh and active during the day time.
Instead, they feel lethargic and fatigued and experience a constant urge to take a nap. They are also unable to concentrate on anything.
Excessive sleeping does not only refer to long sleeping hours at night time. Instead, it also takes into account the long hours of day sleep. People suffering from the problem of excessive sleeping suffer from uncontrollable urge to sleep. Let’s look at the various causes of hypersomnia.
If you have been burning the midnight oil for a long stretch, then chronic lack of sleep is a common cause of excessive sleepiness. It is a mechanism of the body to make up for the lost sleep. Similarly, lack of sleep in the body can also occur if a person suffers from interrupted sleep caused by problems like sleep apnea.
Along with chronic lack of sleep, excessive sleep can also be caused when a person suffers from emotional turmoil, depression or from mood swings. Even postpartum depression can lead to excessive sleeping in a person.
Excessive daytime sleepiness is also associated with a neurological disorder like narcolepsy. In addition, using sedatives or certain medications and disruption to the sleep pattern of a person due to jetlag can also lead to hypersomnia.
Given above are the various causes of excessive sleeping in a person. If the condition carries on for a long time, then you must get a medical checkup done to find out about the underlying cause so that you get a timely treatment.
