Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Majority cases of hand numbness and pain are caused by the problem of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal Tunnel is a narrow, tunnel like structure in the wrist. When the tendons in the wrist swell and pressurize the median nerve which is responsible for feeling production in hands, one feels numbness and pain. Given below are some symptoms, causes and cure of this problem.
Carpal Tunnel can be caused by various factors. While heredity has a major role to play in this problem, it can also be caused by the repeated use of hands over a period of time. This generally occurs in people with jobs which demand repeated use of hand motions. Certain medical conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid gland imbalance can also lead to this problem. While these are the general causes of carpal tunnel syndrome, there are also certain cases where the problem develops without any cause.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome begin and develop gradually. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome initially feel numbness and tingling of the hand. These sensations are often more pronounced at night and can awaken patients from sleep. Moreover, this problem can also lead to an electric-like shocking feeling in the fingers or hand. If the condition is very severe, muscles in the palm may become visibly wasted. This problem can be treated surgically as well as non-surgically. Non surgical treatments are more common in which the patient is asked to wear a brace or splint at night to keep wrist in a natural position. You also need to change patterns of hands to avoid positions and activities that aggravate the condition. In cases where the problem becomes too bothering and severe, surgical treatments can be adopted when non-surgical ones fail.
