Caring for your Cracked Heels

July 14, 2008

How often do you apply a cream or a moisturizer on your foot to take care of its health? The majority would answer in the negative as one often tends to neglect the importance of heels in one’s life. In the fast moving world, it is our feet which are overworked, overstrained and unfortunately even under-nourished. One needs to take adequate care and protection of one’s feet to keep them healthy in order to prevent various foot related problems.

Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are more of a sign of a neglect of one’s foot than a disease. These are linear cut wounds which mostly affect the surface level comprising of the epidermis. However, in some cases it may get deep into the dermis causing excessive pain. Dry skin, lack of nourishment, prolonged standing and wearing the wrong kind of shoes can lead to the problem of cracked heels. However, this is a problem which can be easily prevented and even cured.

The best way to avoid the occurrence of cracked heels is by preventing your feet from exposure to extreme climate as it can lead to dryness thereby leading to heel fissures. Daily care like washing feet daily in lukewarm water, using moisturizing cream and using pumice stone to slough off dry skin can help in the prevention of cracked heels. Along with prevention, there are also natural methods which can help in curing the problem of cracked heels. It has been found that a regular application of a mixture of glycerin and rose water can help to soothe and cure this painful problem. One can also apply the pulp of a ripe banana on the dry or cracked area for about 10 minutes to attain an effective remedy. In addition, one should apply moisturizing cream twice a day so as to prevent the cracked heel from further drying. Along with the above mentioned remedies, one should take care of buying good quality shoes with a shock absorbing sole to keep your feet in a healthy condition.
