Breast Lumps in Women

December 2, 2008

With the growing awareness of breast cancer, women are becoming more cautious with their health. Many women believe that any sort of lump in the breast can be an indication of breast cancer. However, that’s not the case as breast lumps can be a result of other factors too. You need proper diagnosis to find out the exact cause and solution of the problem. However, given below is some important information which will help you understand your problem in a much better way.

Breast lumps are usually local swellings, knots or bulges in the breast area. They cannot necessarily be linked with cancer only as they can be caused by certain other benign conditions too like infection, trauma, cyst or fibrocystic disease of the breast. Breast lumps can be caused due to fibroadenomas which are non cancerous growths and are common in women between the age groups of 15 to 30. Another common reason for breast lumps can be cysts. Cysts are fluid-filled sac that develop in the breast tissue, and are common in women approaching menopause. They can feel either hard or soft and they can become tender and painful before the menstrual period. Breast lumps can also be a result of fat necrosis in which painless, round, firm lumps occur due to disintegrating fatty tissues. This is usually found in women with large breasts. Similarly, Sclerosing adenosis is a breast condition that involves excessive growth of tissues in the breast’s lobules, often resulting in breast pain and also formation of breast lumps. While these are some non cancerous reasons behind the occurrence of breast lumps, these lumps can also be an indicator of breast cancer. Thus, it is necessary for you to get your lump checked so as to find out the appropriate cause behind it for effective and timely treatment.
