Braving Breast Cancer
June 23, 2008
One of the biggest fears of women in today’s world is the fear of Breast Cancer. The name of the disease itself brings an unexplainable anxiety in many women without understanding the real cause of the fear. Instead of living in a constant fear, one should remove the veil of ignorance and understand the real meaning, causes and symptoms of Breast Cancer- a disease which is affecting a large number of women in today’s world.
In simple terms, Breast Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. Cells are the building blocks of tissues in a body and they naturally grow and divide themselves according to the body needs. However, when new cells keep forming despite the body needs, they form an extra mass of tissue called as a ‘growth’ or tumor which can ultimately lead to cancer.
Some of the common causes associated with Breast Cancer include those related to age, family history, lifestyle, late childbearing, genetic disorders and exposure to radioactive rays. According to Research reports, genetic or hormonal factors seem to constitute the primary risk factors for breast cancer.
Instead of taking shelter under the veil of ignorance, every woman should boldly confront the disease as early diagnosis of breast cancer can lead to an early and a healthy recovery. Some of the common symptoms of the disease are listed below which if found should be immediately reported to the doctor to avoid further complications:
• A lump in the breast area.
• An unusual change in the size and shape of breasts.
• Liquid discharge from nipple area.
With the growing awareness of the disease, there has also been an increase in the diagnostic techniques which commonly include the tools of mammogram, ultra-sonography and even surgical biopsy.
For those women who are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, it is not the end of the world. There are many treatments available which include those of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological therapy. Most importantly, one should keep intact one’s strong sense of self-confidence and will power as breast cancer is like any other disease which can happen to anyone. After all, it is not a disease for which one has to feel guilty or ashamed.
