It is made up of bright, bright red orange stigmas or threads and it is believed that the redder the saffron, the higher its quality. Saffron threads are available in both whole and powdered form. You must have usually heard about numerous use of saffron in dishes as its aromatic, exotic, slight sweet taste and aromatic scent adds to the exotic quality of dishes. However, along with its wide and popular usage in dishes, saffron also has wide medicinal properties and it aids in the overall health and well being of a person. The benefits of saffron range a wide horizon as it helps in digestion, prevents colic, treats depression, asthma, atherosclerosis, painful menstrual symptoms, and is also used in Ayurvedic medicines. Research has also found that saffron can have many anti-cancer effects and it also helps in lowering of bad cholesterol.  Additionally, saffron acts as an antispasmodic and is used in cough suppressants. Also, saffron aids in treatment of insomnia, whooping cough, acidity, headaches, urinary disorders, and premature ejaculation amongst others.  Along with helping in the health of body, saffron also aids in treatment of acne and other skin disorders.

As mentioned before, research has found anti-cancerous properties in saffron. This is primarily due to antioxidants present in it which provide protection against various kinds of cancers like leukemia, ovarian carcinoma and also provides protection against coronary heart disease and hepatitis. Also, people with diabetes can be greatly benefited by it.
