Benefits of Proteins

November 20, 2008

Did you know that every function in the living cell depends on proteins? They are thus considered as building blocks of living organisms. They are essential for the health and growth of every cell in the body and thus you should provide your body with adequate amount of protein through diet to live a healthy and happy life. Given below is a detailed analysis of the various health benefits of proteins.

As mentioned before, protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood. Even our hairs and nails are mostly made of proteins. Moreover, you also need proteins to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals. Proteins in the form of enzymes, hormones and antibodies promote healthy metabolic and physiological processes. Moreover, they are also needed for strengthening and boosting of nervous and immunity system. Proteins are essential for growth and repair and the transmission of nerve impulses are all dependent on proteins. Moreover, our body uses protein to make hemoglobin. Not to forget, it is proteins which help you in doing important tasks like moving your legs or lungs. Moreover, blood proteins like albumin and globulin function to maintain fluid balance in the body.

Thus, a low amount of protein in the blood causes the problem of edema. Children deficient in protein also show symptoms of retarded growth, hair loss, poor digestibility, liver damage and poor immunity.

Though protein is essential for the overall health and well being of a person, an excess of protein can cause problems in people who have liver and kidney problems. Moreover, if you are providing your body with excess protein through high intake of meat and dairy products, then that is also risk of high cholesterol level. Thus, follow moderation and provide your body with adequate amount of protein for healthy functioning- neither less nor more.
