Benefits of Dietary Fiber

July 12, 2008

The health benefits of dietary fiber are gaining prominence due to the awareness of the various ill effects which its deficiency causes in one’s body. There are two types of fibers- soluble and insoluble and they both aid in the healthy functioning of the body. While soluble fibers found in beans and fruits help in making a person feel full, the insoluble fibers found in whole grains, nuts and vegetables help in the proper functioning of one’s digestive system. A high fiber diet is thus associated with various health claims as it helps in digestion, keeps the blood pressure and cholesterol under check and helps in the reduced rates of colon cancer along with promoting the health of one’s heart and kidney.

A diet consisting of high fibers prevents overeating as it makes one’s stomach feel full. This in turn helps in controlling weight related problems. Thus, people who plan to go in for a diet must make it a point to include a large amount of fibers in it. In addition, fibers help in the smooth functioning of the digestive system and thus help in preventing constipation. By ensuring the proper and smooth functioning of the bowels, they also help in preventing colon cancer.

A diet consisting of high fiber is good for the health of your heart as it helps in lowering of one’s cholesterol and blood pressure along with regulating one’s blood sugar. It has been found that dietary fibers, especially soluble fibers, can also have cancer protecting benefits. With so many health benefits, one should make it a point to include fibers in one’s diet. The best way is to get a morning boost by indulging oneself in a nutritious high-fiber diet. In addition, whenever one feels hungry, one should have a quick bite of a fibrous fruit or nut. The key point is that fibers should be included in one’s daily diet as they would help you remain healthy and happy.
