Benefits of Citrus Fruits

When we think of vitamin C and its numerous health benefits, the first thing that comes to our mind is citrus fruits as they are a powerhouse of vitamin C. However, do not restrict citrus fruits to only vitamin C as they are also rich in other important nutrients like foliate, potassium, thiamine, niacin and fiber amongst others. Additionally, they are fat free, sodium free and even cholesterol free.

Oranges are the one of the major fruits that falls under the category of being vitamin C rich. Other citric fruits include limes, lemons, grapefruits and mandarins amongst others. Let’s now look at the various ways in which citrus fruits make you healthy and fit.

Having citrus fruits can keep your heart healthy. This is because studies have shown that prevents rise in levels of oxidized LDL and also help in lowering your blood pressure. Also, a growing research is establishing a strong role of Vitamin C in protecting the body against cancer. Though the research is still not complete, there have been theories which depict that citrus fruits help in preventing the formation of cancers, slows the growth of existing cancer, and also helps in killing cancer cells already present in the body.

If you are anemic, then having citrus fruits can be of a great help as citrus fruits help in the absorption of iron by the body. People who have intake of vitamin C and citrus fruits have a lower risk factor of developing cataracts.

If you are pregnant, then citrus fruits can help you too. They help in the prevention of various birth defects, which every pregnant woman fears of. Thus, include citrus fruits like orange and lime in your regular diet so as to yield its positive benefits for a healthy and a happy life.
