Benefits of Calcium
Every one of us must have got a glass of milk in the morning with an assurance from our mothers that drinking milk would help us grow taller, stronger and healthier. That assurance and belief was not false as calcium is one of the most important mineral in one’s body which not only helps in the strong formation of one’s bones and teeth but also helps in the prevention of various diseases.
Calcium salts make up about 70% of one’s bone weight and helps the bones to become strong and rigid. About 1% of calcium circulates in one’s bloodstream where it performs a variety of important functions like helping in the contraction of heart muscles and transmission of nerve impulses along with regulating the secretion of various hormones which in turn aids in the overall functioning of the body. According to some studies, if one has a vegetarian diet consisting of essential minerals like calcium and magnesium, one can keep one’s blood pressure in check. Moreover, an increased intake of dietal and supplemental calcium is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.
Calcium is very essential for women in particular as their biological structure demands more calcium intake than men. This is because menopause leads to an increased rate of bone loss which in turn puts them to higher risk for development of a calcium-deficient disease called as osteoporosis. Thus, an increased intake of dietary calcium should be taken by women especially by pregnant women and nursing mothers as calcium also aids in the milk formation in one’s body. Moreover, it has been found that calcium improves premenstrual moods and thus helps in easing the symptoms of PMS.
Cramps, sprains, bone breakage, osteoporosis, nerves irritability and muscle spasms are all associated with a calcium deficiency in one’s body. Thus to attain a healthy and a strong life, one should make it a point to eat calcium rich diet as calcium forms an important ingredient for the overall functioning of the body.
