Benefits of Antioxidants
There is a lot of talk about the various benefits of antioxidants which helps in keeping you healthy and also young. Antioxidants are naturally occurring nutrients found in certain fruits and vegetables which offer a wide range of benefits as listed below.
It has been found that antioxidants protect human cells from oxidative damage and provide stronger immune resistance to flues, viruses and infections. They provide protection against degenerative diseases and are considered pivotal for anti-aging benefits since they slow down the aging process of your skin, cells, tissues and organs. Thus, naturally consume antioxidants to not only look young but also feel young. Since these antioxidants prevent free radicals from damaging your body, they play an important role in preventing various kinds of cancers. They also help in keeping your heart and your overall body healthy and fit.
The highest ranking vegetables and fruits in antioxidant content are broccoli, spinach, greens, Brussels sprouts, beets, red peppers, carrots and tomatoes and fruits like berries, oranges, pink grapefruit, apricots, plums, peaches, red grapes and papaya. Vitamins C and E, carotenoids (including beta-carotene), and the mineral selenium are all powerful antioxidants found in food. However, since vitamin C is water soluble, cooking can destroy the vitamin C in a food. The anti-oxidant beta-carotene found in red, yellow and leafy green vegetables and fruits help in keeping the skin healthy along with preventing night blindness and infections. Similarly, the antioxidant, vitamin E, helps in reducing risk of cancer, heart disease and other age-associated diseases. While antioxidants are extremely beneficial for the body, an excess of them can prove harmful and even toxic as they might then promote free radical promotion. Thus, consume antioxidants wisely preferably through diet to enjoy a healthy and disease-free life.
