“If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn
If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.
…
If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence.
If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy”.
- Shiv Khera
In his book ‘You Can Win’, Shiv Khera has rightly brought out the importance of parenting in a child’s physical, psychological and emotional development. A child should be groomed in a positive way so that the qualities of honesty, integrity and discipline are instilled into him without damaging his self-esteem or confidence. Hence, a successful parenting is one in which parents become the mentors as well as friends of their children and teach them through tools of love, care and motivation.
Spending quality time
The most important way to build up a relationship of love and faith with your children is by the simple method of spending quality time with them. In the busy life of today’s world, this relationship is getting lost in thin air as parents don’t find time for their children. This in turn makes the child feel neglected and unwanted thereby leading him into wrong ways in search for love and happiness.
Praise to Encourage
Small words of praise and encouragement can bring big positive effect on your child as it helps in boosting up his confidence and self-esteem. Children can be taught morals and values by encouraging and praising them rather than criticizing or punishing them.
Teaching through games
Children are naturally fond of plays and activities and hence they learn a thing quickly if taught in the manner of activity games. Thus, children can be taught the importance of self-regulation and discipline through games like board games which involve the use of discipline, concentration and focus.
Ordering their lifestyle
From the very beginning, parents should keep a regular schedule of meals, naps and bedtimes to teach the child the importance of discipline and time management in one’s life.
Firm, not Harsh
Parents need to be consistent and firm in the behavioral and social rules they want to set up for their child and should not surrender in front of the child’s tears and pleas. They should neither be too lenient, nor too harsh as the primary task of any parent is to help his child turn into a civilized, responsible and a healthy human being.
