Bad Dental Habits in Kids

November 16, 2009

baddentalhabitGood dental care from early years is a must to attain naturally healthy and shining teeth. However, there are many bad dental habits a child indulges in. This article will throw light on such harmful dental habits which one must get rid of.

Parents are the role models for their children. Thus, to make your child follow good dental hygiene, you need to set an example for them. Regular brushing of teeth is a must and you must ensure that your child brushes his teeth after every meal.

Many kids are in the habit of having milk or juices at night. Usually, this happens when you keep bottles of milk and juices near your child’s bed. Avoid this habit as having sweet things at night and sleeping without brushing or rinsing your teeth can lead to cavities and tooth decay.

Drinking loads of cola and carbonated drinks is a bad dental habit as it makes your teeth vulnerable to various infections and decay. Also, children are often seen sucking cold ice-cubes.

It has been found that such cold ice cubes can harm teeth, making them brittle and even vulnerable to fractures. In addition, you should also ensure that your kid does not indulge in excessive intake of food items that can stain his teeth.

Thumb sucking is a bad dental habit as it can lead to formation of buck teeth. The problem of thumb sucking in children should be stopped from the early years of a child itself.

Many kids have a tendency to swallow toothpastes. This is a bad dental habit as toothpastes usually contain fluoride which is not healthy when consumed.

Pay attention to the above mentioned bad dental habits which children often indulge in. Take steps to avoid such habits and teach your child the importance of proper oral hygiene to help your child develop strong and healthy teeth.
