Back Pain in Pregnancy

May 19, 2009

backpainpregnancyMany women suffer from back pain during their pregnancy period and this pain can range from mild to severe. Since you are gaining weight and also undergoing many hormonal changes, there are certain things that a woman suffers from during pregnancy and one of them is back pain. Given below are some helpful tips that can help you ease the pain of your back.

Have your back well supported during pregnancy. Practice good posture as that can help in eliminating back pain caused by wrong posture.  You should avoid standing for long time as that can aggravate the back pain.

Also, you need to provide your back with rest and that can be done by sitting with your feet slightly elevated.  If your back pain gives you sleepless nights, then you can try applying a hot bottle or a heating pad to ease the pain. Also, try sleeping on your sides than on your back

Even during pregnancy, it is always advisable to remain fit and healthy. For that, you should indulge in mild exercises so that you strengthen your back. However, don’t overstrain your body and take a break whenever you feel tired. Also, before trying out exercises, you should ask your doctor about them.

It has been found that exercises like swimming can help in keeping the back strong and healthy. Also cardiovascular exercises, pelvic tilt exercises, and certain back strengthening exercises can help a pregnant woman. Back massages are also beneficial and there are also various back support belts that are available for pregnant women.

If you suffer from back pain, then you should take care of your foot wear too. Avoid wearing heels as they can aggravate the back pain. If the back pain becomes severe, prolonged, and unbearable, then you must contact your doctor.
