Baby Yeast Infection

August 1, 2008

Yeast thrives on wet and humid environment and thus an untreated diaper rash of your child can easily turn as a site for yeast infection. However, babies don’t get yeast infection only because of their wet diapers but instead they can get infected by the food they eat too. Baby yeast infection manifests mostly among two months old babies or even younger newborns. However, they can affect older babies too. This infection is characterized by rashes which have multiple red bumps, pus-filled bumps or a scaling pattern on the skin that is infected. While this infection is usually harmless, it can lead to a lot of discomfort to the child. Thus, one should take adequate care and protection to prevent one’s child from this infection and also to cure it as soon as possible to bring back the healthy smile on your baby’s face.

Babies can develop yeast infection through wet diapers, taking of antibiotics, being fed by a yeast infected mother, through use of unclean bottles and also due to wet and humid weather conditions. Since this infection causes a lot of discomfort to the child, the affected babies often become grumpy, frustrated and cranky. In addition, baby yeast infection is harmless in its early stages but later on in can lead to problems like malnutrition and dehydration, pain and difficulty in swallowing and can also lead to further complications if left untreated for a longer time.

By following proper hygienic conditions, one can prevent the problem of baby yeast infection. This involves frequent changing of baby’s diapers to keep the area clean and dry, sterilizing bottles and artificial nipples and also eliminating candida-aggravating foods from the baby’s diet which implies elimination of refined carbohydrates and gluten grains. To treat a baby yeast infection, one should use a topical anti-yeast or antifungal cream and if the condition does not improve in a couple of days, one should consult a doctor to avoid any complication.
