Asthma in Children
December 2, 2008
If your child has frequent or repeated cough and wheezing, then he is probably suffering from asthma. Many children are suffering from the disturbing problem of asthma which is usually sub-divided into various terms according to its particular symptoms: allergic bronchitis, allergic cough, spasmodic bronchitis or even wheezy bronchitis. However, all these fall under the broader category of asthma in children. There are a number of reasons which may contribute to the rise in asthma incidents in children like growing pollution, changing lifestyles, and many more. Given below are some symptoms of asthma and the way it can be treated.
Asthma in children is usually defined as an obstructive respiratory condition which is usually characterized by recurring episodes or attacks of wheezing, cough and shortness of breath. In a child, you will find symptoms like chronic and recurring cough; wheezing accompanied by shortness of breath and a tight feeling in the chest; interrupted or difficulty in talking; and general discomfort. You will also notice that an asthmatic child has less stamina, especially in physical and active activities; as compared to his normal counterparts. While genetic and hereditary factors play an important role in asthma, it has also been found that a number of asthmatic cases can be linked with allergic skin reactions. Usually children develop these skin allergies like eczema as trigger for asthma. Moreover, there are also other triggers which can lead to asthma. These include allergens like food items, dust or pollen; irritants and pollutants in the air; weather conditions; stress and also certain medications. To treat this problem, there are various medications as well as inhalers available. Moreover, doctors also advise parents to check out about the particular allergen which triggers asthmatic attack in the child and eventually eliminate that trigger. However, the most important part is to not overlook the symptoms of asthma in your child and to get it treated as soon as possible. Usually, it is said that children outgrow this problem with age. However, this needs proper care, prevention and treatment.
