Arthritis in Women

November 14, 2008

A majority of women suffer from the problem of arthritis and it is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems which limit everyday activities along with causing pain in joints. Arthritis is a name given to a number of medical conditions which affect the musculoskeletal system of a person. Due to their biological makeup, women face more problems of arthritis than men. Given below are some common types of arthritis in women and the symptoms experienced by them.

Whatever type of arthritis one faces, the results are not good as it restricts the movement of a person along with leading to swelling and pain in joints. Some of the most common kinds of arthritis in women include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The former is more prevalent in older women as it is a degenerative joint disease which restricts the movement of the person affected. On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis affects the immune system and attacks joints, tissues and organs. It is more prevalent in women within the age group of 15 to 45. Other types of arthritis common in women are fibromyalgia, infectious arthritis and tendonitis. Almost all these kind of arthritis display symptoms like pain and stiffness in joints, swelling around joints, difficulty in moving and even redness in the area around the joint.

There are various factors which put a person at risk of arthritis. These include hereditary factors, age as people with old age are more prone to arthritis and also weight. Also, people who have had a joint infection also put themselves at a higher risk of arthritis. Since this problem can lead to a restriction in movement and lifestyle, one should try to prevent it by following a healthy lifestyle from the beginning itself. Keep your weight under check and eat diet with important nutrients and minerals to remain healthy and fit.
