Looking after the well being of one’s body and mind through the use of essential oils derived from plants is the defining principle of aromatherapy. It is based on the fundamental belief that Nature’s bounty provides the life force to revive, rejuvenate and relax oneself. Aromatherapy works at the holistic level as it addresses the whole person including his body, mind and soul and is thus not constrained only to the physical self. It may include identification and treatment of a particular disease but that is accompanied by the overall emphasis on the wellbeing and happiness of a person.
Aromatherapy works through the use of essential oils which can be found in leaves, barks, seeds, roots and flowers of plants. This kind of therapy uses two forms of mechanism: one is the primary use of aroma or fragrance for psychological and emotional treatment as it brings about a relaxation effect along with the other mechanism which focuses on the direct pharmacological effects of the essential oil. Essential oils are medicinal and fragrant and they thus help in bringing about a soothing and a relaxing effect along with a healing process.
Essential oils can prove to be antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, anti-inflammatory and can also prove to be invigorating and energizing. Their popular uses can be seen in the way basil which has a sweet and mild spicy aroma is used for sharpening concentration in aromatherapy. Moreover, it is also used for providing relief from migraines and headaches. Similarly, aromatherapy uses black pepper with its sharp and spicy aroma to stimulate the circulation in one’s body to provide relief from muscular aches and pains. While lemon oil is used as an anti-depressant, rose and sandalwood oil are used as aphrodisiacs.
Aromatherapy works in two ways: it can either work through direct inhalation or through indirect one which involves external application. While direct inhalation can be performed through oil diffusers and vaporizers, the modes of external application include massage therapy and aromatic bath. Different methods are used in aromatherapy which in turn depends on differing ailments. However, the main aim is to deliver aroma and fragrance in such a way that it has a holistic healing effect.
