Are you suffering from kleptomania? Read this out!

September 18, 2008

Kleptomania is a serious-though relatively rare and very often misunderstood -a mental disorder that starts at a young age, usually in adolescence. There’s a big difference between a professional shoplifters and kleptomaniacs. A professional shoplifter is someone who steals to resell and makes money but kleptomaniacs are unaware of the fact that they are stealing initially and later the fear and embarrassment holds them back from confessing. The fear of becoming social outcast intimidates most of them.

Kleptomaniacs may often be attracted to only one kind of stuff. The most common being pens, books, lipsticks etc. It is more common in females than males. This type of disorder is found in those people who have histories of obsessive-compulsive disorder or who suffered from ailment like bulimia. Researchers have revealed that people with kleptomania are often from affluent families and can afford the stuff they are stealing. People suffering from such disorder are unable to put a finger on “why” since the cause of same isn’t known to them and even researchers claim that more research is needed to better understand the possible causes of kleptomania. This uncontrollable behavior is often linked with obsessive compulsive disorder by scientists. Even unique, isolating and disturbing home atmosphere and other causes for depression too triggers the tendencies of kleptomania.

Although there’s no cure for kleptomania, treatment with medication or psychotherapy can be used to end the cycle of compulsive stealing. Sometimes, you never have to go too far to deal with the problem of kleptomania. Any person from patient’s family or friends in whom a person can confide, can help in curing the problem. A gentle and empathetic approach along with earned trust of an affected person is really what all needed to cure kleptomania properly.
