Are You Giving Birth to An Obese Baby? Read It Out!

September 2, 2008

If you are above 25 years of age, and have a family history of diabetes and are over-weight, you could be prone to gestational diabetes and mind it, Mothers with gestational diabetes often give birth to fat babies who are at risk for obesity.

This condition usually develops in the second trimester or later in pregnancy, but in certain cases, as early as 20 weeks. The mother’s high glucose level penetrates placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels as well. This causes baby’s pancreas to work overtime to create extra insulin for regulating the extra sugar, which results in more energy production than usual. Since the baby gets more energy than it needs to grow and develop, the extra energy gets stored as fat in her or her body. Thus, this leads mothers to giving birth to a macrosomia or a “fat” baby.

Such babies face number of health problems like damaged shoulders after their birth etc. they even have very low levels of blood glucose levels at the time of their birth, have higher risks of breathing problems, heart problems and spinal defects too.

So, make sure you include screening of gestational diabetes as a routine part of your prenatal care. You can go for or even ask your doctor for a glucose challenge test which is done between 24 and 28 week of pregnancy or earlier if you are particularly at risk of gestational diabetes. It includes periods of fasting and drinking a solution with high glucose level, after which your blood sugar count is monitored.

So take early precautions to save your baby suffering from this problem. Remember that this gestational diabetes can be managed with strict adherence to meal plans and regular fitness regime coupled with medications prescribed by your doctor.
