Are you a Caffeine Addict?

July 3, 2008

Have the small doses of coffee intake which one took to remain awake turned into an addictive habit? If yes, then one may be heading towards health problems as it has been found that small amounts of caffeine helps in removing drowsiness and fatigue, but an excess of it can have adverse effects like insomnia, anxiety, panic attacks, rapid heart beat and abdominal pain amongst others.

When one drinks caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea and sodas, the caffeine in the drinks causes an increase in the neuron activity in the brain which in turn leads to a release of hormone- adrenalin. This in turn makes one feels fresh and alert for a temporary time as with the drop in adrenalin level, one again feels weak, irritated and tired which in turn is accompanied with a craving for another cup of coffee. This becomes like a vicious circle leading to a person becoming a caffeine addict. However, too much of caffeine can backfire as it can lead to all sorts of damage to one’s health.

It has been found that too much of caffeine intake can lead to a constricting of one’s blood vessels which in turn reduces the flow of blood to important areas like the brain. It also impairs and suppresses the digestive and immune system of a person along with leading to a faster loss of calcium and magnesium from one’s body. In addition, it can lead to an increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, increase in cholesterol along with neurological disorders like anxiety, tremors and depression.

Just like any other addiction, caffeine addiction too is hard to overcome. If one abruptly stops its intake, one can face withdrawal symptoms like headaches, depression and fatigue. Thus, one should try to reduce ones intake of caffeine over a period of time. One can switch to the healthy habit of drinking lots of water and green tea as along with being good in taste, it contains flavonoids and antioxidants which are good for one’s health. One should take care to remain away from caffeine addiction because caffeine in small amounts can be beneficial, but when it becomes an addiction, it can disrupt the healthy life of a person.
